Deep Dive 1 - How to shift minds and influence change: Why messaging matters for primary prevention
Crafting strategic and engaging messages that shift minds and influence change is at the core of primary prevention practice and is the focus for PreventX: Messaging for a Movement.
This session will set the scene for this years’ PreventX and provide a taster of what is to come over the following two days. Panelists will explore how to think about and design messaging for primary prevention that is effective in advocacy, policy, communications, campaigns and programs in all places where people live, work, learn and play.
We will unpack some of the fundamental questions for the conference: What is messaging, and why does it matter for primary prevention? What are some evidence-based frameworks we can use, e.g. values based messaging? What can we learn from other movements and other fields? How do we make sure our messages are tailored to the audience they are trying to reach? How do we make sure our work is as inclusive as possible?

Deep Dive 2 - The first storytellers: lessons from First Nations-led prevention
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the world’s oldest storytellers and are experts in designing and sharing messages for truth-telling and change.
Join this session to hear from First Nations activists and leaders as they explore what messaging looks like for Aboriginal-led prevention.
This session will explore how self-determination and First Nations justice are supported by sharing stories of strength, resilience and solutions in order to address family and gender-based violence, structural racism and the ongoing impacts of colonisation. We will also hear about how and why it is important that the messages we use in all primary prevention reinforce and support this.
We will also consider community-led strategies, resources and frameworks that have been developed to date. What can we learn from these and from current experience in Aboriginal-led prevention and campaigns for self-determination and justice? How can we support this by building messages into broader primary prevention work?

We will dig deeper into the evidence that helps us inform the way we build and deliver campaigns, exploring lessons from some large-scale prevention campaigns across Australia. We will also consider gaps in our knowledge and learning from other social change campaign experiences to cultivate ideas about how we can continue to strengthen campaigns to achieve lasting change.

To prepare for this workshop:
We ask that you consider the prevention activity you do with and across your community, the shared learnings that you hold, consider things that have worked well and opportunities to continue to strengthen the work you do. Consider whether you currently use/embed a strengths-based approach to the messages you use across your campaigns and prevention activity. Bring this along to share with other workshop attendees

Panel 1 - Messaging the evidence: How to use evidence to inspire change and progress primary prevention
We rely on research, data and evidence to understand family and gender-based violence and what works best to prevent it.
This session will explore the different forms that this knowledge takes, as well as important limitations and gaps and how to fill them. How do we ensure the questions we ask and the data we capture reflects the safer and more diverse and equal future we want?
Panelists will discuss how different forms of research, data and evidence are variously valued and used in primary prevention efforts. It will explore how to use research and evaluation to craft messages that inspire our audiences and design prevention programs that are more inclusive and effective. This session will also focus on how to frame evidence in a way that elevates an issue and speaks to the hearts and minds of target audiences to support positive and lasting change.

Panel 2 - Beyond the binary: LGBTIQ+ inclusive messaging in prevention
Everyone deserves to live in a world where they are respected, safe and celebrated, and able to live and love freely.
Drawing on the Rainbow Health Australia Pride in Prevention Messaging Guide, this panel will explore how to develop messaging with and for LGBTIQ+ communities that target the drivers specific to these communities. It will also unpack how this is inextricably linked to prevention of violence against women and gender equality, through a focus on transforming rigid and binary ideas about sexuality and gender.
This session will draw on practitioner experience to unpack what works best, and what lessons can be applied to deliver strong and effective messages that address the shared drivers of family and gender-based violence for everyone.
