Professional Bio

Amani Haydar is an author, visual artist, and advocate for women’s health and safety based on Dharug land. Amani’s ground-breaking memoir The Mother Wound, published in 2021, explores the effects of domestic abuse and state-sanctioned violence on women and has received several awards including the 2022 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Non-fiction. Amani is a member of the Domestic Family and Sexual Violence Commission Lived Experience Advisory Council and consults with government and non-government institutions on improving access and outcomes for victim-survivors of violence. Drawing on her legal background and lived experiences, Amani has served on the boards of Bankstown Women’s Health Centre and the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights. As an active visual artist and former Archibald Prize finalist, Amani facilitates visual arts and storytelling workshops for people from migrant communities. Her illustrations have been featured in publications like The Very Best Doughnut by Randa Abdel-Fattah and Safar by Sarah Malik.
